"This Flying Life is the story of Claire L. Walters and friends. She began flying in 1941 and is still flying in her own Palms to Pines Air Race (31st this year) and today is the successful fundraiser for The Ninety-Nines? Museum of Women Pilots. A flight instructor for 47 years, for 27 of them she was the President of Claire Walters Flight Academy, teaching thousands to fulfill their dreams, and many of them are now military or airline pilots, and many more are engaged in a variety of aviation occupations. She tells vividly of her solo flight in a small twin-engine over the vast Pacific from Oakland, California to Australia. There are many more adventures described here, including her racing in the famous Powder Puff Derbies. In 1998, the National Aeronautics Association gave Claire Walters an Elder Statesman Award for "career efforts which have directly contributed to making aerospace in the U.S.A. the most reliable, advanced, and safest in the world."
